Dusty Payne of Lahaina was pulled unconscious from the waters on the North Shore of Oahu on Monday after a spill while surfing and had to be revived before taken to the hospital, the World Surf League website reported.
The former World Championship Tour surfer fell and hit his head on the reef at Backdoor Pipeline on Monday morning and didn’t come up, Ryder Guest, who was in the lineup at the time, told Surfline. Other surfers found him and got his head out of the water.
“He was unconscious till he got to the beach; then came conscious a couple minutes later and blood was everywhere. It was so gnarly,” said Guest. “Lifeguards gave him oxygen and stabilized him for like 10-15 minutes, then the firemen and the ambulance came.”
Lifeguard Adam Lerner said in the World Surf League report that Payne took a blow to the head and may have broken his jaw, “but fortunately he was conscious and somewhat coherent by the time they took him to the hospital.”
There was no more information about Payne’s condition Monday.
